After working abstractly for some time, I realized how I unwittingly seem to embed my personal experience of a landscape into my paintings, both my internal and external experiences. I find this creative process both fascinating as well as challenging, but ultimately incredibly rewarding. See art works in my Gallery.
I treat my work in creating art just like any other practice that requires time and dedication. I work in my studio every day.
I just love the space that creating abstract art makes for the imagination, for both artist & viewer. I work in a series, several paintings at once, which allows me to utilize my creative energy to its maximum, moving from one painting to the next. This strategy gives me the grace to allow a painting to unfold rather than be forced. I never know what the end result will be, only that I am searching for a feeling, a design, a visual anchored in experience.
My paintings are process driven, meaning my focus is centered on experiencing the "act of creating", balancing both complexity and simplicity. I lead with my curiosity which often drives my exploration to further search for expression while balancing intuition, design and intrigue. Somewhere in this very organic and intuitive process, a unique piece emerges. Often one sees "a place" in my paintings which in essence creates the ultimate space.
I describe my work as paintings that are explorations of both external and internal landscapes. My work is process driven, with several pieces on the go and no end point in mind. This allows me to create intuitively and gives the space for each painting to develop its own unique history. I often step back to adjust the composition and check that my colours are bold and contrasting, however, it is important that throughout the process, my work is created from a sense of "experience". By that I mean, my experience of creating, my experience of my materials, my experience as a living part of a greater landscape.
At some point there will be a moment where the painting starts to make suggestions, and I will intuitively follow this lead. Essentially it's like picking up clues that it’s giving me and chasing them, sometimes for a while, sometimes until the end. It is essential to balance the freedom I feel with a sensitive and analytical approach to guide the painting's completion.
